Thomas wakes up in a metal box with no memory of who he is, who his family is, or anything about himself. He only remembers his first name. Doors open in the ceiling revealing what a large group of teenage boys call "The Glade" that has mountainous walls that surround the whole thing, making it what Thomas would like to call "a prison".

The Glade is a prodigious, vast, forest-like area that is several
football fields long. It is surrounded by tremendous walls making The Glade a large square. In each of the walls, there is a large door or opening that leads into the maze. The Glade is split into four different constituents. In the North East section of The Glade, there are the gardens, which is where the Gladers grow crops and pump water. The Homestead is in the North West; it is where all of the boys sleep. Also near the homestead is a slammer or jail, where they put people that disobey their order. Livestock are raised and slaughtered within the South East quadrant in the Bloodhouse. The last section is the South West, which is home of the deadheads, a small forest area with a graveyard.
